Boots Launches Recycling Reward Initiative
Boots has introduced a consumer incentive tied to its existing recycling scheme, offering customers 500 Advantage Card points — worth £5 — in exchange for recycling five empty beauty and personal care products. The initiative was timed to coincide with Global Recycling Day on 18th March.
To participate, customers must download the Recycle at Boots app and register with Scan2Recycle, scanning five empty product containers and uploading them for approval, which typically takes up to 24 hours. Once approved, customers deposit the packaging at a participating store’s drop-off box, scan a QR code, and receive a voucher redeemable against a minimum £10 spend.
The scheme accepts a range of items that are otherwise difficult to recycle through standard household collections, including wet wipe packaging, toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, pump bottles, empty makeup palettes, and cotton wool bags. The most commonly recycled items at Boots stores are face serums and moisturiser tubes, mascaras, concealers, lipsticks, and powder makeup cases.
The announcement comes as beauty retail more broadly continues to expand take-back and recycling infrastructure. Last year, a coalition including L’Oréal, Tesco, Boots, and L’Occitane ran a consumer education campaign under the Sustainable Beauty Coalition, directing shoppers to local drop-off points via the British Beauty Council’s interactive recycling map.
Selfridges has also recently extended its Reselfridges Recycle programme across all four of its Beauty Halls, offering loyalty rewards for every five items deposited. Operated in partnership with MYGroup, the scheme accepts fragrance bottles and cosmetics from any brand.
Together, these initiatives reflect growing momentum among UK beauty and personal care retailers to embed circular economy behaviour into the consumer shopping journey through reward-based incentives.
